Gut, chest and other body symptoms

When the whole body joins the nervous-system story

Also called: IBS · functional dyspepsia · breathing pattern disorder · functional body symptoms

People with FND more often also meet functional gut symptoms, breathing pattern problems, chest tightness without cardiac disease, jaw pain and related patterns. Each still needs appropriate checks.

Safety. Urgent care for severe chest pain, black stools, vomiting blood, breathlessness at rest, or collapse. Never assume cardiac or GI emergencies are “functional” without assessment.

How it can feel

  • Bloating, pain, urgent bowels or nausea.
  • Breath that will not feel full; air hunger.
  • Chest tightness that sparks health fear.
  • Jaw clenching and facial pain.

Day to day

  • Food rules and toilet mapping take over outings.
  • Breathing symptoms mimic panic and feed it.
  • Multiple clinics can fragment care — a shared plan helps.

Why this can be FND (simply)

The nervous system runs gut motility, breathing rhythm and muscle tension. Functional disorders in different systems often cluster. That clustering is recognised — it is not you “collecting diagnoses for fun”.

What can help

  • Medical assessment for each major symptom pathway.
  • Dietetic / GI input for IBS-type symptoms where appropriate.
  • Breathing retraining with a knowledgeable physio for breathing pattern disorder.
  • Integrated pacing across all symptoms, not separate boom-bust cycles.

This is information, not a treatment plan. Personal care decisions belong with you and your clinicians.

FAQs

Why do I keep getting “normal” tests?

Functional gut and breathing problems often show normal structural tests. Normal does not mean imaginary — but new red flags still need review.
