Post-concussion symptoms

When recovery after a head injury drags on

Also called: post-concussion syndrome · persistent symptoms after concussion

After a concussion, some people have prolonged headache, fog, dizziness, mood change and sensory sensitivity. These can overlap with functional symptom patterns and need careful, staged rehab — not endless rest or reckless push.

Safety. Urgent care for worsening confusion, repeated vomiting, seizures, severe headache after injury, or neurological deterioration.

How it can feel

  • Headache and pressure after mental effort.
  • Light and noise intolerance.
  • Fog, irritability and sleep disruption.
  • Dizziness with busy visuals.

Day to day

  • Return-to-work or study may need a graded plan.
  • Screens and open-plan spaces can prolong symptoms.
  • People may expect a linear recovery that you do not have.

Why this can be FND (simply)

Concussion recovery involves brain networks settling after injury. Persistent symptoms can include functional amplification. Assessment should hold both injury history and functional patterns.

What can help

  • Medical review and, where needed, concussion clinics.
  • Graded cognitive and physical activity.
  • Sleep, headache and dizziness management.
  • Avoiding both prolonged total rest and sudden full-load return.

This is information, not a treatment plan. Personal care decisions belong with you and your clinicians.

FAQs

How long should concussion symptoms last?

Many improve in days to weeks; some last longer. Persistent symptoms deserve structured support rather than dismissal.
