Why We Created Every Gift Gives — and Why the FND Shop Is Staying

The gap we keep seeing

FND Connect was created because people living with Functional Neurological Disorder are too often left trying to join the dots themselves. They may need clear information, a safe community, practical tools or help with equipment and therapies while existing routes are slow, fragmented or simply unable to meet the need.

Some of that help costs money to provide. Keeping resources free, maintaining technology, supporting community spaces and responding to practical requests all require dependable income. Donations, monthly Friends and community fundraising are essential, but relying on appeals alone is neither comfortable nor resilient.

We wanted another source of income—one connected to an ordinary, positive part of life rather than another moment of crisis.

Why a gift shop?

Birthdays still happen. People celebrate weddings, new babies, anniversaries, new homes, graduations and the small moments that deserve a thank you. Most of us will need to buy a present for somebody at some point.

That gave us a simple idea: what if a gift could do its normal job beautifully, then give once more?

On Every Gift Gives, the first job is still to be a genuinely lovely gift. It has to be something the recipient will enjoy, not a charity purchase people make out of obligation. The second gift is the profit left behind: income that supports FND Connect’s wider mission.

Something wonderful for them. Something meaningful for someone else.

Two shops, two different purposes

This distinction matters, so we want to be completely clear.

The FND Connect merchandise shop

Our existing FND merchandise shop is for the FND community and its supporters. Its clothing, mugs, jewellery and awareness products let people wear the cause, show solidarity and sometimes begin a conversation that would not otherwise happen. That shop remains part of FND Connect.

Every Gift Gives

Every Gift Gives is deliberately mainstream. You can shop by recipient, occasion or budget, choose something personalised, or find a gift that is ready to give. The recipient does not need to know anything about FND for their present to make a difference.

The connection is in the purpose behind the business, not printed across every product.

What “every penny of profit” actually means

A purchase is not the same as a donation, and the whole selling price is not profit. Products have to be bought or made, delivered and paid for securely. The shop also has genuine operating costs.

After those product, delivery, payment and operating costs, every penny left supports FND CONNECT CIC. There are no outside shareholders receiving a share of the profit and no vague percentage hidden in small print. As Every Gift Gives develops a meaningful trading history, we intend to report what it contributes rather than imply impact before the numbers exist.

What the profit can support

Income from the shop joins the wider resources that support FND Connect’s work. Depending on need and available funds, that can include:

• practical help, including assessed support towards equipment, therapies and essentials that protect independence;
• free, plain-English information that helps people understand FND and prepare for difficult conversations;
• community and peer connection for people with FND, carers and families;
• purpose-built digital tools, including SeizeControl for private symptom and seizure tracking;
• awareness and outreach that help FND become better understood.

Would it not be simpler just to ask for donations?

A direct donation is extremely valuable because it does not carry the product and fulfilment costs of a purchase. If somebody wants to give directly, our Fund the FND Gap campaign and monthly Friends remain clearer routes.

But not everybody can or wants to make another donation. Every Gift Gives is not trying to replace giving. It creates an additional route for somebody who already needs to buy a present and would prefer the profit to do some good.

We are not asking people to consume more for the sake of the cause. We are asking them to remember us when a gift is already on their list.

What happens next

The shop will keep growing around useful ways to find a gift: who it is for, the occasion, the budget and whether it should be personalised or ready to give. Its own story page explains how the idea works from the customer’s side.
