FND Connect Tremors Disability Card
The FND Connect Tremors Disability Card is designed to help people understand what is happening when someone experiences tremors, shaking, jerking or trembling caused by Functional Neurological Disorder.
For many people with FND, tremors can be frightening, exhausting and easily misunderstood. They may be mistaken for anxiety, intoxication, attention seeking, or something the person can simply “stop” doing. This card helps explain clearly and calmly that the person has a neurological condition and may need patience, space and understanding.
The front of the card gives a clear explanation for others:
- I may have tremors
- My body may shake, jerk or tremble in ways I cannot control
- I am not drunk
- I have a neurological condition
- Please be patient and give me time
The reverse side gives practical guidance on how to help during a tremor episode, including staying calm, speaking gently, offering somewhere safe to sit, reducing noise and stimulation, and asking before helping.
It also includes a clear “please do not” section, helping others understand not to grab, restrain, shout, assume the person is anxious or attention seeking, or give medication unless prescribed.
The card also explains when emergency medical help may be needed, including if the tremor lasts much longer than usual, the person has trouble breathing, has fallen or been injured, shows new or severe symptoms, or if there is serious concern for their safety.
There is space to write the cardholder’s name and emergency contact details, making it useful for daily life, appointments, public spaces, school, work, travel, events and situations where the person may struggle to explain what is happening in the moment.
